On the 4th of November, 2017, Himpunan Mahasiswa
Program Studi Hubungan Internasional held an annual event called Short
Diplomatic Course Model United Nations Conference at UPH Lippo Karawaci campus.
The conference was on ‘Rising Sea Levels’, and discussed the
effects of global warming and climate change. The delegations were made up
freshman students who represented various countries- most of which were
archipelago or island states who are directly affected by the issue. The
conference was held in English, for both the international and regular classes.
Short Diplomatic Course Model United Nations Conference was
the closing event for HMPS-HI’s Short Diplomatic Course, which was held over a
course of five weeks. Each week hosted a session and discussed various
techniques and topics with regards to diplomacy. The course was designed to help
equip freshman students with the skills and confidence to practice diplomacy
and participate in Model United Nations competitions. It received good
reception from the freshman students, as they were able to practice skills such
as public speaking, debate, and research.
The event was organized by the academic division of HMPS-HI,
with Nadya Mosqueda as the person-in-charge of the event. She called on a
number of International Relations senior students to help out with the event-
they taught the freshman tips and tricks on how to develop their skills as well
as shared their experience in Model United Nations competitions. Back in 2016,
Nadya herself took part in Short Diplomatic Course and admitted that it “helped
develop the courage to practice public speaking”.
At the end of the Model United Nations Conference, students
who performed well, as well as maintained their stance throughout the
conference, were presented with awards in the form of certificates for their
achievement.
