GO-Jek: A Handy Partner for Indonesians
by Natasha Evelyn S
Most
Indonesia citizens are already familiar with those motorcycle riders wearing
green jackets and helmets. They can be easily spotted along the streets or at
dining spots in many cities across Indonesia.
Founded
in 2010 as an online motorcycle ride-hailing service, GO-Jek has expanded its
services to a wider range including transportation, logistics, mobile payments,
food delivery, and many other services. Only within some clicks, user will be
connected to a driver who is ready to deliver the service according to your
need. Currently, GO-Jek operates in 50 cities across Indonesia and more to
follow in the coming years.
The
convenience that GO-Jek offers has attracted more app-users. “Since my parents
do not provide me with car, GO-Jek is very convenient whenever I want to buy
food.” said Jessika, a Surabaya-based GO-Jek user who currently studies in
Tangerang. “Moreover, I don’t need to queue and can just sit back at home.” she
added.
Not
only providing convenience to its users, the success of the company due to the
positive response of the consumers has also created employment for many
Indonesian. In
accordance to the increasing users, the number of GO-Jek drivers has grown
significantly as well. During its first 5 years of establishment, 120.000
Go-Jek drivers have spread out across many regions in Indonesia. The number is
growing each year and in 2017, it has reached 250.000.
M
Nurrezky Lasminarto has been a GO-Jek driver for more than one year. His
average income per day can reach approximately 300.000 rupiah. “I love my
current job as by being a GO-Jek driver, I can get more money compared to my
previous job.”
In addition to the decent income, the simplicity of applying as a GO-Jek driver have made this job favourable for the
lower income Indonesia citizen. From mouth to mouth, more and more people
become aware of the ease of being a GO-Jek Driver.
“Before
joining GO-Jek, it was hard for me to find a job. The convenience that GO-Jek
offers has helped me to get a job because as long as you have a motorcycle and
a phone, you can be a driver,” said Ishak, appreciating his job as a
GO-Jek driver.
However,
with more and more people becoming GO-Jek drivers as well as the development of
other online service app, the income of those drivers will not be as much as
before. “With the existence of Grab, some of our customers have shifted to this
online service app similar to GO-Jek,” mentioned Ishak. Nevertheless, he still
enjoys being a GO-Jek driver and will likely to continue his career.
