Jakarta Fashion Week: "Bhinneka dan Berkarya"

TREND STORY

‘A dream doesn’t become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work’ as Colin Powell said. Ambitious and creative 20 years-old Canissia Leo Bunga also believed that one ought to work through to reach one’s dreams. Showing interest in fashion designing since high school, she decided to pursue this interest as a career. She pursued studies in Binus Northumbria School of Design, majoring in Fashion Management. Aside from that, she also took Fashion Illustration course in Istituo di Moda Burgo. With determined passion, she joined Abineri Ang Atelier et Createur de Mode to sharpen her design and pattern drafting ability.
Hard work surely paid off as she managed to join Jakarta Fashion Week. Jakarta Fashion Week is an annual event held by FEMINA Group, which acts as a platform for local and international fashion designers to showcase their collection on runway. It is considered as one of the most prestigious fashion event in Indonesia, similar to other fashion weeks all around the world. This year, Jakarta Fashion Week was held in a week, from October 21-27 at Senayan City shopping mall.
It was her second time joining Jakarta Fashion Week as one of the fashion designers showcasing their collections. Recalling her first time in Jakarta Fashion Week 2016 taking ‘mermaids’ theme for her collections, Canissia claimed that this year’s Fashion Week was different from two (2) years ago in terms of the overall celebration and the hype of the event due to the tenth anniversary of Jakarta Fashion Week. Even though held in 2017, this year's fashion week was often called as Jakarta Fashion Week 2018. Since what being showcased were basically the predicted fashion styles or trends within next year, according to Canissia.

This year is absolutely special for Jakarta Fashion Week, since it is the tenth anniversary of Jakarta Fashion Week. In additional, the theme for this year’s event is ‘Bhinneka dan Berkarya’, celebrating the diversities within Indonesia as well as the essence of diversities in creating. Most fashion influencers such as the twins Maria and Elizabeth Rahajeng, Maudy Ayunda, and Dian Sastrowardoyo also attended the fashion week.

Canissia herself showcased her collection of eight (8) modified evening attire (haute couture) with ethnicity of Indonesia as her main focus. She went with the theme of ‘Dara Indonesia’, showcasing the beauty of traditional fabrics of Bali and Nusa Tenggara Timur. She might be young lady, however, It was fascinating to see that Canissia has come up with her own ready-to-wear Batik brand, called ‘NINIROSSA’.

Canissia believed that Jakarta Fashion Week was a very good start and opportunity for her to expand her fashion design career and to make her dreams come true. It was a wonderful moment where she could share the same stage along with world-class fashion designer, notably, Tex Saverio and Sebastian Gunawan.
