Volcanic Alert From The Island of God

By Randolph Jonathan
Mount Agung, a rumbling volcano towering over the east of the "Island of God" (Bali, Indonesia), has forced more than 140,000 people to evacuate as authorities warned it could erupt at any time. Voyagers are trying to avoid the island after scientists issued the highest alert level of the volcano which killed more than 1,000 people when it last erupted in 1963. However, Bali have to prepare this time, imposing a 12-km (7-mile) exclusion zone around the volcano and stocking up on food and emergency supplies at temporary shelters.

Mount Agung is the island’s highest and most sacred volcano, which is home to Pura Besakih temple complex that narrowly escaped the previous eruption. Bali is heavily and broadly dependent on its tourism, therefore the local officials have sought to convince people that the volcano should not pose a threat to people who stay out of the danger zone.

The volcanic mountain is about 35 miles northeast of Kuta, in southern Bali, the main tourist area. About 145,000 people on the Indonesian island of Bali have left their homes around Mount Agung, officials said on Friday. However, disaster officials said instruments recorded more than 800 volcanic earthquakes on Wednesday and many of the quakes in the past week have been strong enough to be felt by people in the surrounding region.
