Filipinos will soon be able to travel to Taiwan visa-free as Taiwanese Premiere Lai Ching-te approved.
The program was supposedly implemented last June but was deferred due to incomplete administrative procedures and inter-agency coordination. As for now, the Taiwanese government have yet to decide whether the policy shall take effect in October or November.
Winston Chen, director general of Taiwanese Foreign Policy's Department of East Asian and Pacific Affairs, announced at a press briefing that the policy will cover a duration stay of up to 14 days.
Chen said that the program aims to promote people-to-people, tourism, and commercial exchanges between the two countries. Taiwanese government hopes that Philippines will reciprocate Taiwan's visa-free privileges.
The Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) in Taipei said that it welcomes Taiwan's gesture and will respond by relaxing visa requirements for Taiwanese travellers. Moreover, MECO Chairman Angelito Banayo called that the two countries may also work together to fight cross-border crimes such as drug trafficking and the likes.
In terms of economic aspect, the policy is expected to bring Taiwan an additional $65.8 million dollars tourism revenues and about 33% increase of Filipinos to visit the country.
