Friday (6/10) - For more than a month, the plague outbreak in Madagascar which happened earlier than expected, has affected larger urban areas and ports, causing 33 dead and 200 has been infected because of its increasing person-to-person transmission.
Plague has always been the country's endemic. But, according to World Health Organization (WHO), this year's is the most rapid one because of its widespread across the country. Moreover, the International Federation of Red Cross (IRFC) reported that the outbreak has spread to 20 districts and 10 regions in Madagascar. Not only that, larger urban areas such as the country's capital Antananarivo, and port cities of Mahajenga and Toamasina has also been affected.
Factors such as extremely short incubation time and rapid contagion are those that boost the spread of the outbreak. This current outbreak consists of two types of plague. The usual type of plague is the bubonic one. But, up to 120 cases that included the least 17 deaths, are presumed as the pneumonic type. This type is more deadly for it is capable to kill the infected person within 12 to 24 hours if not treated. Furthermore, its transmission can happened easily and very fast from person-to-person, only by airbone droplets.
Alarmed by this rapid outbreak, WHO has sending more personnel and supplies to Madagascar. The UN health agency is worried that this current condition could worsen for its season had only just started and predicted to run until April. In their statement, WHO said that “The overall risk of further spread at the national level is high”. (cfm)
