A few of same-sex couples celebrated their marriage in Berlin as it is Germany's first same-sex weddings on Sunday, October 1st after the parliament passed the law change on June.
Between them stood Germany's first married gay couple, Karl Kreile, 59, and Bodo Mende, 60. More than dozens of guests along with journalists filled the Schoeneberg town hall's "Golden Room" to witness the couple exchanging vows and say, "I do".
After the ceremony, Mende stated that he hoped for Germany and European Union to do more in publicizing gay rights across Europe. "We don't need to look far, just to the neighbor countries where the situation is more disturbing," he said, noting that Poland and few of other countries where same-sex marriage is still illegal.
The German parliament voted to approve the marriage equality law after Chancellor Angela Merkel chose to drop her long-opposed vote in June, shortly before national elections.
