Catalan president Carles Puigdemont has announced that the region has
"won the right to become an independent state” after “90 percent of the
2.26 million Catalans” voted “yes” to independence from Spain.
Though the referendum proved to be a landslide win for those who were in
favour with the withdrawal, the “8 percent of voters” who opposed to it
perpetrated “violent raids” in attempt to halt the polling. Various forms of
provocation such as “throwing objects and metal barriers at riot police”
apparently caused police agents to retaliate in the form of rubber bullets and so-called
“police aggression” which injured unarmed citizens- “elderly people, young
girls, and regular citizens” were among those injured.
The actions of the Spanish police were called out by external actors,
who were displeased by “the use of rubber bullets”. A number of individuals
also expressed their concern with the conduct of law enforcement, claiming that
the violence was unnecessary.
