On Thursday, Iraqi’s Prime Minister declared at a press conference in Paris the liberation of Hawija city, one of Islamic State’s last bastions in the country.
The operation begun on September 21 carried out by U.S. -backed Iraqi government forces, Iranian-trained and armed Shia-led parliamentary groups. He affirmed the defeat in Hawija as "victory not just of Iraq, but of the whole world".
Although, a few small villages remain under the control of Islamic
State’s militants, Iraq officials insist that some fighting are still continued
to drive the extremists from their last remaining pockets of territory by the
Syrian border.
Since 2014, IS had begun to weaken and losing its ground in
Iraq when U.S. -backed Iraqi troops conquered Mosul after striving nine-months in arduous battlefield.
It is believed the fall of Hawija will urge the militant group to retreat from its only remain area, which is a stretch of the Euphrates river valley, in the western dessert near the border with Syria.
