A southwestern Turkey court have sentenced at least 46 people to life, which 37 of them were military personnel. They were found guilty of being linked to the failed coup attempt last year. These charges also include attempting to kill President Erdogan and violating the constitution, Turkish state television TRT reported.
The 46 suspects have been on trial since February for being involved in the coup. This trial is also part of the sweeping crackdown that have commenced since the night of the failed July 15, 2016 coup attempt. The defendants have been found to be guilty of attacking the resort where President Erdogan and his family were staying, killing two policemen in the process. The President was not harmed during this attempt due to him leaving the premises shortly beforehand.
Turkey has reportedly blamed a U.S.-based Muslim Cleric, Fethullah Gulen for orchestrating the coup attempt. However, Gulen himself have been living in self-imposed exile in Pennsylvania since 1999, who have also been reported to deny his involvement in the attempt.
