Massive Rockfalls Strike Yosemite Two Days in a Row

A 1300 tons chunk of white granite fell off El Capitan, one of the world’s largest granite monoliths in Yosemite National Park, killing one person and injuring another on Wednesday afternoon while a much larger one struck the same location a day after and injured one man.

The massive granite slab that broke off near the Waterfall Route on Wednesday at about 1:55 p.m. was about 130 feet tall and 65 feet wide, striking a couple from Wales who were standing at the base of the cliff. Andrew Foster died on location whereas his wife, whose name has not been released by the park authorities, suffered from a serious injury and was flown to a hospital 150 miles east of San Francisco.

The second rockfall occurred the next day at the same location around 3:20 p.m. and injured a man while he and his wife were driving along the road beneath the release point. Park officials identified the man as Jim Evans and immediately airlifted him to a hospital. The size of the Thursday’s rockfall has not been measured. However, Ken Yager, the president of the Yosemite Climbing Association, estimated Thursday’s fall was 10 times bigger than the previous one.

The cause of the rockfalls is still unclear and under investigation. A park spokesman said that geologists had inspected the rock walls of El Capitan and that scientists were still working on determining the size and the cause of the rockfall. Despite the incidents, the park remained open.
