Amidst the North Korean crisis
and the issue of an aging population in Japan, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo
Abe decided to call for a snap election next month. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe
was quoted saying, “I’ll demonstrate strong leadership and stand at the
forefront to face a national crisis. This is my responsibility as a leader and
my mission as prime minister.”
The decision to call for a snap
election is regarded by many critics to be a gamble as Abe’s Liberal Democratic
Party (LDP) is predicted to gain only 27.7 percent support as shown by a Kyodo
news agency survey. However, results aren’t decided by polls and Abe’s ratings
have gone up to 50 percent from 30 percent since the start of the rising
tensions between Japan and North Korea. The increase in ratings are due to
Abe’s formidable display of leadership in handling the crisis, which he
promises to continue if he were to win the upcoming election.
The election will see Tokyo
Governor Yuriko Koike’s newly launched Party of Hope act as a distraction for
Abe as Koike wants to change the political landscape of Japan. As the first
woman to take the position of Governor of Tokyo, reports say that she might be
aiming to become Japan’s first woman prime minister.
