All across Catalonia, thousands are occupying polling stations prior to Sunday’s referendum for the region’s independence. Activists and citizens alike have gathered in unity, but also in fear of the polls’ closing.
The Spanish government declared the vote illegal and sent officers to disband the stations by Sunday. However, it hasn’t stopped the thousands from setting up picnics and movie screenings in an effort to stop the regional officers from closing the stations. The regional officers have been told to refrain from violence as they meet the growing crowd of thousands people, adamant to go ahead with the referendum.
Many fear this could be the culmination of the tensions between Spain’s central government and her autonomous region; which has grown worse since the Madrid curtailed much Catalonia’s powers via a constitutional court decision in 2010.
